Tongues were set wagging when Elizabeth Markham's glamorous young parents were killed, leaving their only child to the unspeakable class of poor relation. Forced to live with her cruel, miserly uncle Julius, Elizabeth was forbidden to participate in the season's festivities. Elizabeth realized that marriage was her only escape, and she decided on a daring plan she would trick her way into the Duke of Dunster's exclusive house party and snare one of the eligible bachelors sure to be happy to dance with her.

Elizabeth's plan succeeded swimmingly, as she flirted with everyone with the exception of the arrogant Lord Charles Lufford, who was considered by those in the know to be quite a catch. She ignored Charles thoroughly until her uncle discovered her deception and it was, of all people, Charles who saved her - by announcing their engagement!

But Elizabeth's troubles were far from over. In her absence she had come into an inheritance and her uncle, along with another sinister party, would rather see her dead than receive.

The Flirt The Regency Intrigue Series Book 1 edition by M C Beaton Romance eBooks

Once long ago I read a few Marion Chesney/M.C. Beaton novels, then just stopped. It was so long ago I don't even remember why, but picking up this free offering (which I notice is now at regular price again and don't get it, please, until it's free again) leads to the conclusion that she was just boring the heck out of me.

This particular story showed a bit of promise at first, although full of cliche and predictable characters and plot. The heroine, once a young diamond-of-the-first-water debutante but now come down in the world after the death of her parents, lives with her strict man-of-God uncle and his family, more or less in the role of Cinderella. A Cinderella who is starved and beaten and doesn't have one bird or mouse to befriend her. Her absolute hunger is portrayed well and is affecting.

But the story itself, although beginning rather well, devolved quickly into cliche after cliche. 1) There's the intransigent hero who is so conflicted about his feelings for her, kissing her one moment and treating her like dirt the next. 2) There's an inheritance unknown to the heroine which her unscrupulous family want for themselves. 3) There's upper-class snobbery in the form of the hero's mother and sister. 4) Threats on the life of our heroine. 5) An abduction, of course.

All of this and more in what seemed to be a never-ending book. I went skimming and skipping along by the time I got to perhaps 60% (or even before). Life's too short to spend reading all the words of this thing.

The Flirt The Regency Intrigue Series Book 1 edition by M C Beaton Romance eBooks Reviews

This was a very well-done regency. The writing is superb, the characters were all well fleshed out, the plot was engaging. I felt so horrible for Elizabeth the entire time. Everyone mistreated her and misunderstood her. No on seemed to actually be looking out for her. I do wish there had been more time for Elizabeth and the hero to get to know one another before the ending, I felt like they needed to have a couple days to work through all their issues. I know if I were Elizabeth I don't think I would be able to just forgive and forget so easily. None of the villains, save one, got the comeuppance they deserved. I felt that most of them were let off the hook too easily. Elizabeth got the HEA she deserved but after all she went through I was determined she should get justice too. Elizabeth was a unique heroine. She was so scarred and damaged after having been the most celebrated débutante in London. I wish there had been an epilogue just to ensure the readers that she does in fact recover but that her hardships had scoured away her past frivolous self and left a mature, world-wise woman who had compassion for her lessers and a desire to help them. Very highly recommended for all Regency Romance lovers.
This story had promise, but it was ultimately a disappointment.

The plot few too many incredibly convenient coincidences for my taste. The female protagonist was nicely developed, but all of the other characters were under-developed and came off as quite one-dimensional. The writing featured an omniscient narrator who simultaneously knew the thoughts of both the male and female lead, which in places led to directly telling the reader things that would have been better implied a bit more subtly.
Another great series from the incomparable M. C. Beaton! If you enjoy seeing young regency ladies find their match during the London season, this author, and this series will be just right for you.
A book I couldn't put down. A treasure. I enjoyed and had to find out what happened next. There was a part, that I stumbled through and felt it to wordy, but overall it was good and readers who enjoy intrigue and old fashioned romance , not spicy bedroom scenes will enjoy this one.
Elizabeth Markham is considered a terrible flirt by Lord Charles when she disappears from the London scene. Her parents have met their end in a carriage accident and Elizabeth must live with her uncle.

Elizabeth is used and abused for two long years before she manages to escape. Even then there are attempts on her life and ugly rumors being spread about her.

I must suppose that you either like Marion Chesney or you don't and I do. I can always count on a good story with a happy ending.
At first I thought the writing style was a bit different from Marion Chesney aka M.C. Barton but it came around. Some books you read and then sell or pass them on. Some you keep to read again because you enjoyed them so much. This one is a keeper.
This book has a good plot - very romantic in a nice innocent way. Reminded me of some of Georgette Heyer's novels. The plot also includes attempted murder, rescue, nasty relatives, etc. I always read the one star reviews and almost decided against buying this book. I'm glad I did no heed the naysayers because I did like the main characters and understood why they behaved the way they did. I recommend it for readers who enjoy books free of crude language and steamy sex.
